Solo developer Argyro Brotsi has released a free Steam demo for Seina: a Tale of Spirits, giving players their first opportunity to explore the hand-painted adventure ahead of its planned release on PC and consoles. The game follows Mika, a young girl searching for her missing cat, Seina. Her journey takes her into an overgrown spirit world filled with moss-covered shrines, quiet forests and unusual creatures, with the demo introducing a portion of this setting alongside several of its inhabitants.
Rather than focusing on combat or failure states, Seina: a Tale of Spirits is built around relaxed exploration. Players can solve light environmental puzzles, discover hidden paths and assist spirit animals while moving through environments presented in a watercolour art style. The project draws inspiration from Brotsi’s travels through traditional Japanese villages during her honeymoon. Those experiences have influenced the game’s environments and creature designs, while its story explores themes including connection, kindness and discovery.
Brotsi, who is developing the game as the founder of Pofupofu Studios, explained that the atmosphere she encountered during her trip to Japan became the foundation for the project:
Seina started in a small Japanese village, not at a desk. I fell in love with the quiet of those places, the way the light fell through the trees, the way nothing was in a hurry, and I wanted to give people somewhere to step into that feeling. The whole game is my love letter to that trip.
The free demo for Seina: a Tale of Spirits is available now on Steam. The full game is currently planned for release on PC and consoles.
