Hayes Theatre Co Brings Reimagined The Pirates Of Penzance To The Foundry Theatre In Sydney

Date:

Hayes Theatre Co has confirmed that its production of The Pirates of Penzance will transition to the Foundry Theatre in Pyrmont for a limited season starting in May. This revival follows a series of performances during 2025 across Sydney, Canberra, Wollongong, and Wyong. Scheduled to run from 12 May 2026 to 7 June 2026, the production is located within the Sydney Lyric complex.

This specific version of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta was adapted by Richard Carroll and Victoria Falconer, featuring an unconventional approach where only five actors fulfill all on stage roles. The narrative remains centered on the satirical story of shipmates and lovers, though the staging relies on quick costume changes and character shifts to manage the small cast size. The ensemble for this iteration includes returning performers Jay Laga’aia, Brittanie Shipway, and Maxwell Simon, who are joined by new cast members Sarah Murr and Tana Laga’aia.

Tickets are currently on sale starting from $59.90. Bookings can be made through the Ticketmaster website, or by calling the box office on 136 100.

Co-Artistic Director Richard Carroll stated that the partnership with the Foundry Theatre was chosen specifically to match the energetic and inventive nature of the production:

Hayes shows thrive on being inventive, nimble and always entertaining, which aligns perfectly with the vision behind the Foundry Theatre. We’ve been looking for the right moment to bring a show to this space, and our rollicking, rowdy Gilbert & Sullivan reimagining is the ultimate way to kick off this exciting new partnership.

Victoria Falconer explained that expanding the reach of Hayes productions into different venues is a strategic move to support the company’s long term artistic growth:

There is a specific magic built into the DNA of every Hayes production – an intimacy that we know will translate beautifully to an innovative space like the Foundry Theatre. Expanding our reach to new spaces, creative partnerships and bigger audiences isn’t just a growth milestone, it paves an ambitious pathway that will directly fuel the creativity and scope of future Hayes productions.
