Taking their iconic Disgaea tactical RPG franchise in a completely different direction, which they haven’t really done since the PlayStation Portable era, Nippon Ichi Software America (NIS America) has announced the upcoming release of Disgaea Mayhem. The title is scheduled to launch later this year across each the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam.
Transitioning from the series’ traditional turn-based strategy, Disgaea Mayhem operates as an action RPG where players take direct control of the combat. The narrative follows a mercenary named N.A., who takes on monster-hunting jobs to earn a paycheck. N.A. teams up with Princess Tichelle, a royal with a strong craving for flan, which aims to offer players a light-hearted story where the duo works together to achieve their respective goals.
During gameplay, players will have access to seven different weapon classes, with swords, bows, guns, fists, and axes among the options. The system allows for seamless weapon swapping, enabling players to change their combat style on the fly while battling large groups of enemies.
Despite the new action-oriented format, several staple mechanics from the mainline Disgaea franchise are returning. Players will still be able to grind levels, reincarnate their characters to increase base stats, and venture into the Item World to enhance their equipment. The newly named Dark Chocolate Assembly will serve as the venue for passing bills, and the series’ signature ability to deal millions of points of damage remains a core feature. Additionally, classic demons such as the Prinny can be recruited to assist the player in battle.
