Square Enix used the latest Nintendo Direct to confirm two new projects from its internal Team Asano studio. Octopath Traveler 0, a standalone HD-2D turn-based RPG set before the events of the original Octopath Traveler, will arrive on 4 December 2025. The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, a single-player action RPG with real-time combat, is slated for launch in 2026. Both titles will release on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store, with Octopath Traveler 0 also coming to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.
Octopath Traveler 0 returns players to Orsterra for a story of restoration and revenge driven by the quest to recover divine rings. In a first for the series, fans can customise their own protagonist and rebuild a hometown destroyed at the outset of the narrative. Core mechanics such as Path Actions and the Break and Boost battle system return alongside the franchise’s signature HD-2D art style.
Pre-orders have begun on select storefronts, offering the Travel Provisions support pack with healing items and the Icewind Mastery skill. Square Enix also announced a save-data bonus program that grants in-game rewards to players who have data or purchase history from Octopath Traveler, Octopath Traveler II, Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster, or the upcoming HD-2D Dragon Quest remakes.
Meanwhile, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales sets out to shift the studio’s signature HD-2D look toward fully hand-drawn, real-time action, blending brisk combat with exploration-heavy dungeon design.
Set in the war-torn realm of Philabieldia, the story follows rookie adventurer Elliot and his fairy companion Faie. Humanity clings to survival inside the walled Kingdom of Huther, protected by the magic of Princess Heuria, while rival beast clans rule the wilderness beyond. When newly unearthed ruins appear just outside the city, Elliot and Faie volunteer to investigate, unaware that their mission will spiral into a saga that spans both time and space.
Players can freely roam fields, caves and ancient structures teeming with hostile creatures. Elliot carries seven weapon classes that cover close, mid and long-range options. Chains and sickles, for instance, pull foes in for a follow-up strike, while bows offer safer distance play. Each weapon slot supports magicite, upgrade stones that either boost raw stats or radically alter behaviour. The Linked Arrows magicite, showcased in the debut demo, adds a secondary hit to nearby targets with every bow shot, encouraging crowd control builds.
Faie is more than a travelling mascot. Her Fairy Actions help Elliot traverse gaps, collect out-of-reach treasures and unleash special attacks. One highlighted skill, Sprint, propels the duo across terrain at high speed, making both exploration and combat positioning more dynamic. Environmental puzzles also feature prominently: cracked walls can be blasted open to reveal Secret Treasure Routes, and Shrines of Life pose optional combat gauntlets that reward those willing to test their reflexes.
Nintendo Switch 2 users can sample a “Debut Demo” right now. The slice includes Oboro Village–style plains, a swamp biome and the multi-level Unexplored Ruins dungeon, capped with an in-game survey to gather player impressions for the final build. Square Enix notes that feedback will directly influence balance and feature depth leading up to release.
