Originally released on and exclusive to the PlayStation Vita, Bandai Namco Entertainment has announced that the action game Freedom Wars is being remastered and re-released on PC and consoles starting 10 January 2025 under the title Freedom Wars Remastered. Set in a dystopian future where resources are scarce, the game takes place in Panopticons—vast prison cities where survival hinges on fighting for freedom on the battlefield.
Freedom Wars immerses players in a world where citizens, known as “Sinners,” are born with a million-year prison sentence. The only way to reduce this sentence is by taking part in dangerous combat operations, competing with other Panopticons for the planet’s limited resources. The remastered edition will feature several enhancements for current platforms, including 4K resolution, upgraded textures, and a smoother 60 frames-per-second experience on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC via Steam, and Nintendo Switch.
In this grim future, Sinners must volunteer for combat missions to obtain resources, rescue abducted citizens or battle rival enemies. Players will wield Thorn weapons, which provide both offensive capabilities and the ability to traverse the environment with three-dimensional movement. Thorns also allow players to disarm enemies, with the option to sever limbs for additional resources.
New upgrades in Freedom Wars Remastered include an overhauled weapon crafting system, adjustable difficulty settings, and various quality-of-life improvements. The remaster will also maintain the community-driven aspects of the original, allowing up to four players to team up in cooperative online combat missions. Additionally, players will earn Entitlement Points by volunteering for battles, which can be exchanged for new privileges such as extended running time or the ability to recline. Customizable android wardens, who oversee the Sinners, can even assist in combat.
