So what’s next from Koei Tecmo’s Team Ninja team following their collaboration with Square Enix for the Final Fantasy spin-off game Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin? Unveiled earlier today during Sony Interactive Entertainment’s State of Play announcement event, it was confirmed that the action RPG Rise of the Ronin is in the works exclusively for the PlayStation 5, that will once again take players to Japan in a long-past era, filling the shoes of a wandering Ronin as they carve out their legacy.
Rise of the Ronin is pitched as a “combat focused open-world action RPG that takes place in Japan at a time of great change. It is the very end of a 300-year long Edo Period, commonly known as “Bakumatsu”. Set in the late 19th century, Japan is facing the darkest of times as it struggles with its oppressive rulers and deadly diseases while western influence permeates as civil war continues to rage between the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Anti-Shogunate factions”.
Furthermore, about the Ronin character you control, they are described as “a warrior bound to no master and free to make choices of its own”, and will be able to wield not only katanas but new firearm weaponry they hope “depicts the unique personality of this period”.
