Cold Symmetry and Playstack have locked in a launch date for Mortal Shell II, with the dark fantasy action RPG set to arrive worldwide on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on Thursday 20 August 2026. The date was revealed through a new trailer, which is scored to “Darker Thoughts” by British metal band Paradise Lost.
The announcement follows the Mortal Shell II beta, which the studio reports was downloaded by more than 500,000 players in less than two weeks. Mortal Shell II itself has been in development for more than four years at Cold Symmetry, the team behind the original game. It is a single player title built around a handcrafted, interconnected open world that the developer describes as expansive but deliberately compact, an approach intended to respect the player’s time. The world holds over 60 dungeons and is linked by winding footpaths guarded by the desperate and the fanatical, with those who wander further afield finding additional story elements, Shells, weaponry, upgrades and other curiosities.
Combat aims to span both melee and ranged approaches and is not bound by a stamina system, which the developer says leaves players free to draw on multiple tactics to shatter enemy posture and strike critically. The Shell mechanic returns as well, with the dormant forms of forgotten warriors scattered across the crumbling world. Awakening and possessing a Shell unlocks its innate strengths and unique abilities, while lost memories gradually reveal the hidden history attached to each one.
Pre-orders are open now at select retailers and cover both a Standard Edition and a Revered Edition. The latter is a collector’s version of the game, bundling a comprehensive artbook, an exclusive steelbook and limited edition fine art prints inside a dedicated collector’s box. The title will also be sold in physical disc format on PlayStation 5.
