Ubisoft has officially launched Ascent into Chaos, the first season of Skull and Bones Year 2 content, introducing new features and gameplay systems to the open-world pirate adventure. Players can now enter an arms race between two rival megacorporations in the Indian Ocean, as tensions edge closer to war.
New features in Ascent into Chaos include the Item Ascension system, which allows players to boost weapon stats and apply gameplay-altering modifications. Ascended Items can be refined further by spending silver and materials at vendors, offering deeper loadout customisation.
The update also introduces World Tiers, a new difficulty system beginning with World Tier 2, which offers more challenging encounters and higher-value rewards. Changes to the Helm endgame experience add more flexibility – players can now produce materials at manufactories and invest in upgrades via the Helm Upgrade Tree. This will also be the final season in which manufactory levels and Pieces of Eight are reset.
Midway through the season, a new PvP mode titled Death Tides will go live. Players can either bring their own loadouts or select from preset ships such as the Pyroclast, Stormwall, or Paladin. Each vessel features unique abilities, including explosive La Peste Mortars and the summonable Kuharibu. Four maps will be available – Brimstone, Sanctuary, Sunken Ruins, and Mukiti Falls – with earned rewards carrying over to both the main game and Smuggler Pass.
Additional quality-of-life improvements include the option to hide ship armour, one-button manufactory funding, a revamped map and minimap, improved weakpoint visuals, and a new onboarding experience for first-time players.
To mark the new season, a Free Weekend event will run from 18 April (1.00am AEST) to 20 April (10.00pm AEST). During this period, all players will have full access to the game – including the core storyline, current seasonal content, and multiplayer challenges – with progression carrying over to the full version if purchased.
Ubisoft has also revealed its roadmap for the rest of Year 2:
- Season 2: Oaths of War – Introduces the Frigate, the game’s first playable large ship, featuring additional weapon slots. The conflict between the DMC and Compagnie Royale escalates as factions vie for dominance. Players must choose a side, with outcomes influenced by collective player decisions.
- Season 3: Guts and Glory – A new antagonist, the Rogue Warlord, enters the fray. Players will rescue and assign Officers to their ships, each offering distinct buffs. This season also introduces land combat for the first time.
- Season 4: Eye of the Beast – The Sea People summon a Kraken as neutrality is abandoned. Players will gain access to the Corvette ship and the Hunter’s Guild, which focuses on hunting sea creatures and mastering new skills.
