Originally released on the PlayStation Vita by developer Dimps and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment, Freedom Wars was an interesting action RPG which genuinely showcased what the portable system was capable of. But more than a decade later and the PS Vita now long defunct, a much broader audience finally have the ability to enjoy a remastered version of this cult classic – kudos of publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment.
Developed by the original creators, Freedom Wars Remastered brings several upgrades to the title, including support for 4K resolution, improved textures, streamlined gameplay systems, a new higher difficulty mode called “Deadly Sinner,” and 60fps performance on modern platforms.
Set in a dystopian future, Freedom Wars immerses players in a world where humanity is confined to massive, city-sized prisons called Panopticons. Born into a society ravaged by pollution and resource scarcity, citizens are labelled as “Sinners” and condemned to a million-year prison sentence. Their only path to freedom is through combat—rescuing valuable citizens, battling rival Panopticons, and scrounging resources for survival.
The remastered edition stays true to the original game’s narrative while modernising its mechanics. Players will experience enhanced looting and crafting systems and revamped gameplay elements to ensure a smoother experience. With the help of their Thorn weapons, which enable three-dimensional movement and tactical options like setting traps, healing allies, and severing enemies’ limbs, players must navigate the Panopticon’s harsh world to reduce their sentences.
Freedom Wars Remastered is now available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam.
