During the QuakeCon welcome stream, id Software’s Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin announced the release of a new, definitive combined edition of DOOM and DOOM II, now available globally. The re-release, which merges the two first-person shooters into a single bundle, is available on multiple platforms, including Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Existing owners of DOOM (1993) and/or DOOM II on any supported platform will receive a free upgrade to the new combined game, while retaining access to their original versions.
Originally developed by id Software, DOOM (1993) is that acclaimed first-person shooter which has, over the years, seen an active community of modders and porters, unofficially bringing the game to everything from microwaves to calculators. DOOM II (1994), on the hands continued to build its legacy as a halmark of early-90s gaming. The newly enhanced version of these classics, co-developed with Nightdive Studios, seeks to bring several modern features to these titles.
Key features of the re-release include:
- Online cross-platform deathmatch and co-op modes supporting up to 16 players
- Support for community-published single-player mods, accessible through an in-game mod browser
- An optimised renderer with improved performance, including support for up to 4K resolution and 120 FPS on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC
- Accessibility options to cater to a broader range of players
- A choice between the original MIDI soundtracks and a new optional IDKFA soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult, which includes a never-before-released version for DOOM II
- A brand new episode titled “Legacy of Rust,” featuring new weapons and demons, created in collaboration with individuals from id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames
