Describing add-ons as “like mods – they change the way that things in the game look and behave – and unlike a lot of other Marketplace content, they can be applied to your existing worlds”, Microsoft’s Minecraft team has unveiled that these add-ons can now be accessed via the official Minecraft Marketplace for Minecraft Bedrock Edition.
What is possible with these add-ons? Once such provided example is that one might create a gravestone where a player dies, safely storing their items until broken. Alternatively, another one might allow players to create portals that connect two points in the overworld. Add-ons can be applied to multiplayer worlds and Realms, and only the world owner needs to own the Add-on.
The Minecraft team has emphasised that non-marketplace mods are still permissable, and they have no plans to remove the ability to sideload mods from popular third-party websites or mobile apps… provided they are compliant with the game’s End-User License Agreement (EULA).
Think of this initial launch as a “snapshot” of what Add-ons will look like in the future – a preview meant to test them out and gather feedback from the community with more to come later this year.
