Star Citizen’s 2022 Ship Showdown is Underway

Once again asking their fans what their favourite ship is in the ‘verse, Cloud Imperium Games have kicked off their 2022 Ship Showdown event for their still-in-long-term-alpha crowdfunded sci-fi project, Star Citizen.

Split into ‘Community Call’, ‘Live Showdown’ and ‘Winner Announced’ periods, we are currently in the midst of the ‘Community Call’ period. Over the remaining nine days, players are encouraged to “Write an original song, build something with Lego®, take an epic in-game (or real-life) shot, make a trailer, music video… Hell – build the ship for real if you’re up to it“, and share it via the Star Citizen Community Hub or Twitter using the hashtag ‘#SCShipShowdown’. The top 16 currently flyable/drivable in-game vehicles will make it into the head-to-head Ship Showdown finals.

So why do this? There are some in-game perks for completing each stage of the showdown:

  1. The top 8 competitors will become freely flyable in-game for a limited time starting 8 September 2022
  2. The top 4 competitors will receive a special paint option and in-game challenge coin for their manufacturer
  3. The winner will receive a collectable in-game ship model.

No physical prizes for anyone putting in the hard yards to produce something one-of-a-kind unique in the ‘Community Call’ period, but you can see all community submissions on Twitter HERE.

In development by Cloud Imperium Games and their studios across North America and Europe, Star Citizen is being helmed by Wing Commander (1990s) creator Chris Roberts. The game has currently been in a long-term alpha phase with no confirmed release date. Despite this, the studio has raised more than $435 million USD through on-going crowdfunding. Please keep in mind should you decide to purchase towards Star Citizen, that this is an incomplete project and that you are pledging towards an extended crowdfunding campaign with no 100% guarantee of a finished product.
