For those like myself who struggled for years to nab themselves copies of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness on the PlayStation 2, spin-off games in the franchise such as Phantom Brave and Soul Nomad & the World Eaters helped sate my need for Nippon Ichi Software’s style of pandemonium and RPG gameplay. However, as time has gone on, both have been lost to the ether as technology moved forward and new consoles failed to offer PS2 backwards compatibility. But don’t fret, as both games are now receiving new life on the Nintendo Switch as part of the first NIS Classics collection.
This is a two-in-one package featuring Phantom Brave: The Hermuda Triangle, an enhanced port first published for the Nintendo Wii, and Soul Nomad & the World Eaters, which has not been made available off the PS2 to this day. Both have unique gameplay mechanics but still feature classic-style Disgaea mechanics and comedy. Both versions will feature up-scaled artwork and all DLC content (where relevant) from the original releases.
If this is pitched as the first NIS Classics collection, perhaps we can hold out hope for the Makai Kingdom eventually being released on current-gen hardware. NIS Classics Collection Volume 1: Phantom Brave and Soul Nomad will be available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch later this year.

“Ivoire”
A world of islands and a clear blue sea.
There are various sized islands in the sea; one almost as small as a house, and others big enough for an entire colony.
The owners of the islands are called the “Elders.”
Parts of land, or even whole islands, can be rented.
Home to the Volcano Kingdom, Desert Kingdom, and Jungle Kingdom. Ivoire is full of unique islands with different weather and geography.
The story begins on a small island called “Phantom Isle”.
On a small lonely island in Ivoire, lives Ash, a Phantom who lost his life in battle, and Marona, who has the ability to communicate with Phantoms. Sometimes Marona receives Bottlemails that float along the sea.
Marona, who lost her parents when she was very young, makes her living by completing the requests inside the Bottlemails, as a Chroma. However, because of her abilities, the people call her the “Possessed”. Even if she completes her work, some clients will hesitate to pay her the reward because of her reputation.
Still, Marona stays optimistic and follows what her parents told her a long time ago; “Help people, and someday everyone will start to like you.” Her goal is to save enough money to buy Phantom Isle, which she’s currently renting. Like a subtle wave in the sea, the adventures of Marona and Ash are about to begin.
