Although one could argue that the Persona series is the most popular of ATLUS’ franchises in western markets, it in-fact originated as a spin-off franchise of their mainline Shin Megami Tensei games. While Persona has kept its mainline releases exclusive to Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation consoles since its first release, a majority of Shin Megami Tensei games have been available on Nintendo’s platforms.

As part of the Nintendo Direct Mini-conference, it was confirmed that 2021 would bring two new Shin Megami Tensei releases to the Nintendo Switch.

Shin Megami Tensei III – Nocturne HD Remaster

The first of the confirmed games, to be available in Spring 2021, is a HD remastered version of the originally PlayStation 2 exclusive Shin Megami Tensei III – Nocturne.

First released in 2004, this game puts you in the shoes of a boy (also known as the Demi-fiend) who finds himself caught up in a world-altering event called the ‘Conception’ after visiting a hospital with his friends. Given the powers of a demon, and the ability to recruit more on your side, you must travel through the landscape of the Vortex World – where your alignment to Law, Neutrality or Chaos will drive the outcome.

The one quirk of this RPG is that its director’s cut version (the version released in English) featured a tie-in with Dante from Capcom’s Devil May Cry series, with later versions replacing him with Raidou from Devil Summoner: Kuzunoha Raidou vs. King Abbadon. It is unknown whether either of these crossovers will appear in the HD Remaster.

Shin Megami Tensei V

The second of the game’s showcased, due for release in the second half of 2021 is Shin Megami Tensei V, the next major numbered instalment in the series.

This is not a new announcement per ce, but it is the first we have heard about it since first being previewed way back in 2017.

More information is expected in the coming months.
