It is interesting how a console generation can turn the tables. While the PlayStation 3 might have trailed behind its main competitors in terms of sales for a good portion of its lifetime, the PlayStation 4 has continued to thrive among the gaming community from the start. From the first few months post-launch where it was a challenge to even nab oneself a PlayStation 4 unit without a pre-order made months in advance, to sales continuing at a strong pace a few years on, its no wonder that Sony Computer Entertainment are working on implementing new technology such as a virtual reality headset onto the PlayStation 4.

In an announcement by their Australian division, Sony Computer Entertainment have confirmed some very positive figures in the country. Sourcing NPD Group Australia data, the PlayStation 4 accounted for 59% of the total current generation market value, which includes the Nintendo Wii U, PlayStation 4, Xbox One in addition to games and peripherals. From their own data, SCE Australia have also confirmed that the Xmas Week and the month of December 2015 were the highest performers in Australian PlayStation history. This follows global sales during the festive season, where 5.9 million PS4’s were sold of the 35.9 million units currently in homes across the world.

As PS4® maintains its leadership position in the home console market, it is evident that the home entertainment unit has played an instrumental role in the market success of the Australian Interactive Entertainment category.

Michael Ephraim, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia

We are so proud to see the performance of the entire PlayStation business continue to go from strength to strength, especially as PS4 continues to break records as the fastest selling console in Australian PlayStation history.   We are excited to welcome the inclusion of PlayStation VR, that will again elevate our proposition by pushing the boundaries of innovative technology. Our community holds an invaluable role in making PlayStation the success it is and we’re incredibly grateful and proud to enjoy these achievements with them.

Citing NPD Group Australia results, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia have also mentioned that PlayStation 4 software is outselling its closest competitor by 82% in value and 84% in units. They are also claiming that the PlayStation 4 contributed to 49.1% of the total console software value in 2015. This would be off the back to a range of first and third party titles including Bloodborne, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and more.

Looking into the future, the PlayStation VR is set to be one of the next major PlayStation hardware releases. To be launched sometime in 2016, they claim this “opens the door to revolutionary, immersive gameplay transporting players from their living rooms to amazing worlds and surprising unknown experiences”. With virtual reality gaming still in its early days, time will tell if this is a worthwhile venture for the company. This being said, I just placed my pre-order on a PlayStation VR unit earlier today.
