Metal Gear Online Service to Be Terminated on the 12th June 2012 1

Snake? SNAKE!? SNAAAAAAAAAKE!?!?!

All good things unfortunately must come to an end, and in this instance it is Metal Gear Online. Metal Gear Online was a bonus game attached to the Playstation 3 release of Metal Gear Solid 4 when it was launched on the 12th June 2008 and brought coordinated play between fans of the series, and having played it for several months (Even someone who isn’t really good at this genre of game liked the occasional play) it thought it was limiting in some ways but otherwise very enjoyable. The service was originally slated to have a life span of three years, however out of respect for their loyal fans, they continually pushed back this deadline. However, with their recent announcement they informed gamers that the service will be ending on the 12th June 2012 with the following message:

Nevertheless, we have regretfully come to a point where players have experienced all that this iteration of Metal Gear Online is able to offer. Therefore, it saddens us to announce that we have decided to end online service with the upcoming fourth anniversary of online service. We would like to apologize to all of the users who are currently enjoying the Online Service for this title, and kindly ask for your understanding.

All of the staff involved would like to offer our deepest thanks for the support we’ve gotten since launch. Thank you for coming with us on this journey. Your help allowed MGO to grow and mature. We regret that this journey must end, but we sincerly hope that we will have the opportunity to serve you again in the future.

However, they are not just going to post this message and run, with the intention of opening the game up so everyone who opens up an account before the (Assumingly) 24th April 2012 will be able to take advantage of most of what the game had to offer. The following timeline has been posted:

■ March 21st 2012 16:00 (JST)
– Closure of MGO Online Shop.

■April 24th 2012 18:00 (JST)
– Expansion packs and Preset Codec Message Appeal Packs will be available for free download.
* Note: Registration for new player characters will not be available during this time.
– Reward shop equipment will be available for free.
* With the exception of “non-sale” items.

■June 12th 2012 23:59 (JST)
– End of online service.

As you may have noticed, I bolded some text in the first quote. This is a very vague possibility, but as the release date of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance draws closer, perhaps we might be seeing a brand new iteration of Metal Gear Online that will make use of the games improvements and welcome the multi-console aspect to the games release.
