While I think the video above will sum everything up nicely, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia today announced that it will bolster its on-demand services in Australia tomorrow through the arrival of the Quickflix subscription movie streaming service for the Playstation 3 console. This service will provide unlimited viewing of movies from an always changing catalogue alongside its DVD and Blu-ray rental service in Australia. This does not mean that either the Playstation Network Video Delivery Service or MUBI will be shutting down, but instead will act as another service for those who want to watch movies through their console.

This service will cost $14.99 a month and will allow you to enjoy unlimited access to the aforementioned services. Existing online Blu-ray and DVD rental service customers can upgrade for between $7 and $14 per month depending on the services they wish to take advantage of. As the video above mentioned, if you act now within a limited time period you will be able to take advantage of a promotional offer allowing you unlimited streaming and two Blu-ray disc rentals a month for $4.99 for the first three months.

Michael Ephraim, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment had this to say:

PlayStation 3 in Australia has today made another leap forward in our home entertainment on demand offering with the exciting addition of the home grown Aussie movie subscription service, Quickflix, to our platform. It’s great to be partnering with an innovative, fast growing Australian company making inroads in the multichannel delivery of movie content that will provide our customers even more entertainment choices. With a world of entertainment services at your fingertips, a trifecta of movie services on demand available, and the most highly acclaimed games of 2011, such as UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception™, it’s little wonder PlayStation 3 hit the number one spot for Australian home console sales in 2011. There’s no better time to ensure a PS3 makes it under the tree this year.

Chris Taylor, CEO of Quickflix also had this to include:

Our launch on PS3 is an important milestone in the distribution of our digital streaming product, given the popularity of the PS3 console and its rate of connectivity with 1 million devices connected in Australia. Thousands of subscribers are already enjoying the tremendous value of our unlimited movie proposition and with a great launch offer to PlayStation 3 owners, we expect many more to take up our service over the festive season. Quickflix continues to build the catalogue of movies available for streaming and expects to announce more deals with some of the world’s leading content providers in the coming weeks.

You will be able to download this service through the Playstation Store and can be found on the PS3 XrossMediaBar (XMB).

  1. This is a cool offer PS3 owners in Australia are being
offered $4.99 for the first 3 months sounds good but then your rate jumps up to
$14.99/mo for both streaming and disc rentals. This price is $4.00/mo more than
DISH Network’s Blockbuster Movie Pass. Blockbuster gets new releases 28 days
before Netflix and Redbox does, plus Blockbuster carries the newest releases on
games. You can rent games by mail on consuls like XBOX, XBOX 360, Wii, PS2 and
PS3. You’ll have 100,000 titles to choose from by mail and this includes
movies, TV shows, games and blu-rays. Working for DISH I can tell you that
customers are also able to stream 3,000 movies to their TV and 4,000 movies to
their PC. Customers receive all of this for $10/mo with 20 premium movie channels.
