Umineko no Naku Koro ni - First Thoughts 1

Welcome to Rokkenjima

I have finally had a bit of time to sit down and go through this game a bit and even through I haven’t really gotten into it much, I thought I might as well publish a first impressions review on this Visual Novel.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni - First Thoughts 2

Character List

Graphics: The character designs are drawn rather simply just like what I would expect normal Visual Novels to look like however the backgrounds are very well done and suit the tone of the novel very well.

Music: I was browsing through the song list and I am shocked, I suspected that there would be only suspenseful music however I find that it was in the same tone as Higurashi only there were many different styles.

Sound Effects: There are a wide variety of sound effects that add to the suspense of the novel. Everything from a bell chiming to a supernatural evil laugh.

Storyline: While I havent delved deeply into the storyline yet, I assume that it will be a more serious issue occuring and it will be harder to pick out the one behind it with the many more characters in this series. (As well as the characters being older and most likely more mature).

Theme Song: The theme song named Umineko no naku koro ni (うみねこのなく頃に) which combined with the movies make it a winning combination!

Overall: Currently, I am rather excited to get into this novel and I am planning on blogging my full thoughts on this when I have finished. Am I expecting it to be better than Higurashi? It will have to be excellent in all of it’s arcs to beat Higurashi but it might just pull it off.
