Theatre Royal Sydney Marks 50 Years Of Performances

Theatre Royal Sydney is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its current building on King Street, marking five decades of activity and live performance at the inner-city cultural venue. While the institution itself dates back to 1832, the present structure opened in January 1976. Designed by architect Harry Seidler, the building was constructed on the same site as the original theatre to house a variety of dramas, comedies, and musical productions.

In 2021, the theatre underwent a significant two year redevelopment under the management of Trafalgar Entertainment. This project updated the auditorium to international standards, adding an extra row of seating to bring the total capacity to 1200. The redesigned two tiered layout ensures that no seat in the house is more than 23 metres away from the stage.

Since reopening, the theatre has seen the Australian premieres of Jagged Little Pill and The Lehman Trilogy, along with 301 performances of TINA – The Tina Turner Musical. The 2025 season included Hadestown and a 40th anniversary production of CATS. Looking ahead through 2026, the venue will host Pretty Woman: The Musical, Cluedo in April, Steel Magnolias in May, and Hair in June. Fiddler on the Roof is scheduled for August, followed by SIX the Musical in October.

Tim McFarlane, the Executive Chairman for Trafalgar Entertainment Asia-Pacific, spoke about the achievement of reaching 50 years and the importance of the audiences and productions that have contributed to the venue:

Reaching the 50-year mark is a testament to the vision, perseverance and creativity of everyone who has engaged with Theatre Royal Sydney. We stand on the shoulders of dramas, musicals and audiences which have walked through its doors. Our goal is to ensure this venue continues to thrive and deliver world-class performance for decades to come.

As Theatre Royal Sydney enters its next 50 years, our focus remains on delivering the finest live performance – musicals, drama, dance, comedy and more – while honouring the heritage of the building and its place in Sydney’s cultural fabric. We invite audiences, artists, producers and partners to join us in celebrating this milestone year, to reflect on the past and to look ahead to new stories, new voices and new experiences that will define the next era of this iconic stage.

In addition to the performance schedule, an exclusive line of anniversary merchandise is expected to be released next month.
