Co-founders Nathan M Wright and Andrew Bevis have announced that the Broadway musical Tootsie will make its Australian debut later this year. The production is scheduled to open in Sydney at the Teatro at the Italian Forum this coming May.
Based on the 1982 film starring Dustin Hoffman, the musical follows the story of a talented yet difficult actor who struggles to secure employment. In an act of desperation, he adopts a new persona to land a significant role, leading to a series of comedic complications.
This announcement comes as the production company begins rehearsals for another title, The Prom, this week. Tickets for the Tootsie season are currently available for purchase via the venue’s website.
Director Cameron Mitchell shared his thoughts on the upcoming production, highlighting the blend of nostalgia from the original film and the updated elements of the stage show:
Tootsie is the perfect feel-good musical for everyone. It has all the nostalgia of the 1982 Sydney Pollack film starring Dustin Hoffman with a hilarious new book and dazzling score. I am very excited to work with the team at Teatro and bring this brand-new show to Sydney audiences. Tootsie is laugh out loud funny, with a lot of heart and great song and dance numbers. Can’t wait!
