A new stage adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is moving forward with an expanded creative team, as producers Amanda Ghost and Sir Len Blavatnik (Unigram/Access Entertainment) have confirmed that director David Cromer will helm Gatsby: An American Myth. Joining as producer and general partner is Carmen Pavlovic on behalf of the Australian producer Global Creatures, who in recent years has toured Moulin Rouge! The Musical and Muriel’s Wedding the Musical. The news arrives during the centennial year of Fitzgerald’s novel.
A London reading of the production is scheduled for this week, with further details to be revealed in the near future.
The producers described Cromer as “one of the most sought-after directors working today,” adding that his approach to storytelling will complement the work of the existing creative team, which includes Florence Welch, eight-time Grammy-nominated lead of Florence + the Machine on music and lyrics, and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martyna Majok on the book.
Speaking on his appointment, Cromer commented:
This is one of the most elemental stories of the American Dream and its dark underbelly. Gatsby continues to resonate because it speaks to ambition, illusion and the cost of longing. To build upon the extraordinary work of Florence Welch and Martyna Majok is both a privilege and a thrilling challenge. Their artistry has created a world that is haunting, poetic and deeply human. I’m honoured to collaborate with them to bring this next chapter to life.
