Producers John Frost and Colin Ingram, in collaboration with the original creators Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, have announced that Back to the Future: The Musical will make its Australian debut at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in September 2025. While only the Sydney leg of this tour has been confirmed, it would be surprising if other Australian states weren’t featured as part of a broader national tour.
The musical, based on the iconic 1985 film, follows Marty McFly’s accidental journey to 1955 via a time-travelling DeLorean, where he must ensure his parents fall in love to secure his existence. Featuring a book by Bob Gale and a score by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard, the production blends original compositions with hits like The Power of Love and Johnny B. Goode.
John Frost of Crossroads Live Australia expressed his excitement about bringing the production to Australian audiences, sharing:

Bob Gale remarked on the journey of adapting the story into a musical, stating:

If Bob Zemeckis and I time traveled back to 1980 and told our younger selves that the script they were struggling to write would become a West End and Broadway musical now making its way to Sydney, Australia 45 years later, they’d kick us out of their office and call us crazy. Well, sometimes, crazy ideas give birth to great entertainment, and now Bob and I are eager to share our musical vision with Sydney audiences. This musical production has exceeded our original expectations on every level. Directed by Tony Award-winner John Rando, the musical features an acclaimed design team, including Tim Hatley, Gareth Owen, and Finn Ross, with choreography by Chris Bailey and orchestrations by Ethan Popp. Its original London production, which debuted in 2020, has been extended to July 2025. This Australian tour is being produced by John Frost for Crossroads Live Australia and Colin Ingram for Colin ingram Ltd – as you may have already guessed from the quotes above.
