Australian producer Rodney Rigby has been celebrating recently, having received their fourth Tony Award nomination for their work on the musical Water for Elephants, which is currently being performed on Broadway. This follows a range of other success stories of Australian produced musicals finding success on Broadway, with Global Creatures’ Moulin Rouge! being another such example in recent years.
Water For Elephants is celebrating a total of seven Tony Award nominations. In addition to arguably the most iconic award, ‘Best Musical’, the production is also celebrating nominations for Best Book of a Musical (Rick Elice), Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Takeshi Kata), Best Costume Design of a Musical (David Israel Reynoso), Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Bradley King and David Bengali), Best Direction of a Musical (Jessica Stone) and Best Choreography (Jesse Robb and Shana Carroll).
Musical theatre afficionados, creatives, cast and producers still have some time to wait until they see if these nominations see them become award-recipients, with announcements to be made during the 77th Tony Awards at the Lincoln Centre’s David H. Koch Theatre in New York City on 16 June 2024.
