After touring several states, Global Creatures will be returning their production of Moulin Rouge! The Musical back to where the tour originally began, at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre, for a final encore season. The season is expected to commence 20 August 2023, following their sell-out season at QPAC, Brisbane which is set to conclude at the end of the month.
The premiere of Moulin Rouge! The Musical in Melbourne coincided with the 20th anniversary of Baz Luhrmann’s film Moulin Rouge!, on which the musical is based. The premiere season began in November 2021 and managed to garner an audience of over one million theatre-goers, enjoying sold-out seasons in all states it has toured to – Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, and Brisbane.
Producer Carmen Pavlovic expressed her excitement about the return of the show to Melbourne, acknowledging the warm reception they received during challenging times brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic:
Adding to the excitement of the return season, a special Spectacular Sing-Along Performance will be held on Tuesday, 21st November 2023 at 7:00pm. This one-of-a-kind event will provide audiences with the opportunity to sing along to their favourite remixed songs from the musical. Tickets for this special performance will be available for purchase via Ticketek starting Friday, 14th July 2023 at 9am EST. It goes without saying that if you want to enjoy the musical as is, perhaps look at another session.
The cast includes Alinta Chidzey in the role of the sparkling diamond, Satine, alongside Des Flanagan as bohemian dreamer Christian. Other cast members include Simon Burke AO as the legendary club impresario Harold Zidler and James Bryers as The Duke, while Montmartre’s resident artistes will be played by Bert LaBonté and Ryan Gonzalez, stepping into the roles of Toulouse-Lautrec and Santiago respectively.
