Performing for a limited season in the Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s (QPAC) Lyric Theatre starting in mid-May 2023, Global Creatures’ lastest production – Moulin Rouge! The Musical is headed to Brisbane! While this has been known of for a while now, what you can do from right now is head to the QPAC website and book tickets for the show’s opening weeks – Tuesday 16 May 2023 to Sunday 11 June 2023 inclusive. No end date has been confirmed as of writing, although with a return Melbourne season set to commence on 22 August 2023, I would hazard an end date sometime in late-July or early-August.
Following its debut on Broadway and the early stages of its Australian tour in Melbourne and Sydney, this will be the first time the production has been performed in Queensland.
Debuting on Broadway pre-pandemic, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is an adaptation of the 2001 feature film Moulin Rouge, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Baz Luhrmann. Produced by Carmen Pavlovic and Gerry Ryan OAM for Global Creatures and Bill Damaschke, this is another musical to come from the Australian company Global Creatures, who have produced top-level musical adaptations of Australian classics like Muriel’s Wedding, and other Baz Luhrmann films like Strictly Ballroom.

As in the film, Moulin Rouge! The Musical celebrates over 160 years of music – from Offenbach to Lady Gaga. The stage musical features many of the iconic songs from the movie and also includes recent hits released since the movie premiered 20 years ago.
Tickets to see Moulin Rouge! The Musical can now be booked via the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) website or by calling their QTIX box office team during business hours on 136 246. Prices vary from $69.00 AUD to a whopping $299.00 AUD, the highest prices being for the special Can Can! Table Seating tickets which are “extremely close to the stage and surrounded on all sides by the action onstage”.
The current cast of Moulin Rouge! The Musical currently touring Australia includes Des Flanagan as bohemian dreamer Christian, Alinta Chidzey as sparkling diamond Satine, Simon Burke AO as the legendary club impresario Harold Zidler and Ryan Gonzalez as Santiago. Other Australian cast members include Samantha Dodemaide as Nini, Olivia Vásquez as Arabia, Ruva Ngwenya as La Chocolat, and Christopher J Scalzo as Babydoll. As we are still more than six months out from the season commencing, there could very well be some changes to casting between then and now.
