Return to Boogie Wonderland – Velvet Rewired Headed to Brisbane for Wynnum Fringe

Back in April 2016, Brisbane was whisked back several decades to the boogie wonderland of Studio 56 in Velvet. This proved to be such an incredible season, which I described as offering “a night of music-induced euphoria, presenting a great assortment of songs which was complemented by a strong cast, mesmerising lighting choices and good stage design”. Now in 2021, with us all needing some boogie in our life, its follow-up production of Velvet Rewired will be performed in the Raine & Horne Wynnum Spiegeltent at the Wynnum Fringe.

According to the announcement, this production is a:

Fresh, total reinvented extension of the Velvet journey continues to chart the progress of a young man on his path of self-discovery. He returns to the club known as ‘Velvet’ and is again embraced by its inhabitants. Blind to colour, creed, class, gender, size and sexuality, Velvet Rewired continues the underlying theme of celebration, family and freedom!

Velvet Rewired will see the return of many of Velvet’s original cast members, including Marcia Hines (Jesus Christ Superstar, HAIR), Craig Reid (La Clique, La Soirée) and DJ Joe Accaria (Once, Dream Lover).

Velvet Rewired is described as a fusion of “music, circus and burlesque and this disco inferno”, which they hope will deliver a “flawless theatrical experience with a dazzling array of acrobats, aerialists, amazing vocalists, glitz, glamour and jaw-dropping circus skills!”.

Tickets to attend performances of Velvet Rewired, to commence on 17 November 2021 for a two-week season, will go on-sale tomorrow morning via the official Wynnum Fringe website.
