When my mind shifts to the thought of contemporary circus arts, it is hard not to have the Brisbane-based performing arts company Circa come to mind. Helmed by their Artistic Director and Chief Executive Officer Yaron Lifschitz, Circa have many works touring around the world at the moment, including En Masse, Humans, Peepshow and Wolfgang’s Magical Musical Circus. While it may have a different audience than the typical big-top circus crowd, their productions can still be extraordinary at times.

With a touring schedule that covers venues and festivals both interstate and internationally, Humans has been performed in many countries across the world including Australia, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States to name a few since its inaugural 2017 performance in Sydney. Arts Centre Melbourne have confirmed that following on from the Melbourne season of Wolfgang’s Magical Musical Circus at their venue earlier this year, Humans will be performed in their Playhouse theatre from 27 November 2019 – 30 November 2019 inclusive.

Humans is a 70 minute work created by Yaron Lifschitz and the Circa Ensemble. Through this work, Circa strives to “take audiences on a stirring journey of what it means to be human, and how connections and aspirations all form part of who we are”. This production will feature 10 acrobats, and in addition to Yaron Lifschitz, has a creative team including Jason Organ as technical director and costume designs by Libby McDonnell.

Tickets to this performance can be purchased via the official Arts Centre Melbourne website, or in-person at their box office. There will be five performances in total, four evening sessions and one weekend matinee. Prices, based off seating reserves and concession status, range from $30.00 AUD to $59.00 AUD excluding any service charges.

About Humans

By exploring the physical limits of their bodies and pushing to their extremities, these acrobats question how much the human body can actually take. This way of thinking is then put back onto the audience, causing them to reflect on their own lives, their loved ones, the burdens they carry and the physical and emotional strength it takes to overcome them.

Just as the stage is stripped back, so too is the vulnerability of these highly skilled acrobats laid bare. But, with incredible strength and integrity they connect each moment seamlessly with the next in a thrilling and heart-stopping performance.
