Although the dates could have been changed since the audition brief’s were released via the musical’s official website, it seems like the production team might not be too far off announcing who will be performing whom in the upcoming Australian tour of Matilda: The Musical.
While subject to change, the final round of auditions for children was listed to conclude today, with the adult auditions set to take one day longer and at least initially set to conclude tomorrow (April 14th). Having won a record seven Olivier Awards and a number of other awards and commendations, it will be very interesting to see how Australian performers can live up to the standards set by previous performances in the UK and US.
It seems like the standard is quite high, with Associate Director Nik Ashton tweeting a few days ago:
Truly exciting day of auditions for @MatildainOz #happydownunder

Featuring music and lyrics by Tim Minchin and writing/book by Dennis Kelly, Matilda: The Musical is a stage adaptation of Roald Dahl’s popular children’s book: Matilda. Having grown up reading his books almost religiously and studying both Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in school, I am personally eager to see how these two creative minds have been able to bring such a classic to the stage.
Matilda: The Musical is set to be held at the Sydney Lyric Theatre starting August 11th 2015. These are currently no other legs in this tour currently announced, but it would not surprise me if it eventually made its way up and down the east coast (Queensland & Melbourne) in addition to other capital cities. Given the heavier use of child performers, it wouldn’t surprise me if it takes a little bit longer to arrive in other states.
