Live Action Adaptation of Death Stranding in the Works

Kojima Productions has announced a new collaborative venture with studio A24 (Everything Everywhere All At Once), which will see the formers video game, Death Stranding, come to life as a live-action feature film.

The announcement coincides with 8th anniversary of Kojima Productions, for which Death Stranding was the first major project following Hideo Kojima’s departure from Konami. The film adaptation of Death Stranding aims to explore the enigmatic events of the apocalyptic incident known as the “Death Stranding”. This event, pivotal in the game, intertwines life and death, unleashing nightmarish entities into a world teetering on the edge of devastation.

In a statement, Hideo Kojima expressed his admiration for A24, noting their unique presence in the film industry, as well as excitement for the new venture:

A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other. The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative. I have been attracted to their creations and they have even inspired my own work. Their innovative approach to storytelling aligns with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the last 8 years. Now, we are making a Death Stranding movie together. There are a lot of “game adaptation films” out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game. The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born.

Death Stranding has been played by approximately 16 million players worldwide across the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC platforms. Launched on 8 November before receiving a Director’s Cut release for other platforms, the game features a cast of notable names including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro, and Margaret Qualley. In the game, players navigate a fragmented world as Sam Porter, shouldering the critical task of reconnecting a divided America and fostering hope and unity among the remnants of humanity.
