Nisemonogatari – Oshino Shinobu – 1/8 Figure

Figured as Much Photo Collection #14

Building a collection of anime and video game figures is an expensive hobby. The small collection I have (some of which have been covered on The Otaku’s Study) has easily cost me a few thousand dollars to acquire over the last couple of years. Therefore if you are someone whose favourite characters shift with every season or prefer mainstream characters, and don’t have some form of disposable income, then it might not be the hobby for you. While the most popular figures will sell out during their pre-order period, in situations where you do have the luxury to do so, knowing a figure is tailored to your preferences is essential to ensure you get value for money.

As I have had to pull back from purchasing any new figures for the past couple of months, rather than write reviews of new releases, I would like to share a look at my current figure collection through this new photographic series. I hope my sharing these may help you in deciding whether purchasing a particular figure is a wise decision or note.

With a light novel which has actively been receiving new releases for 15 years and an anime adaptation featuring animation from the acclaimed studio SHAFT which also enjoyed a decade-long run; the Monogatari series may be a niche franchise, but one which has a lot of support from the community. For such a long-running franchise, it should come as little surprise that many of its characters have received multiple figures over the years. One character to receive countless figures – both pre-painted and garage kits – is the vampire Shinobu Oshino.

As with most of her figure adaptations, this one manufactured by Kotobukiya, depicts her in her more recognisable “young” form than her mature vampire form. First released in 2014 with a later re-release in 2019, this figure illustrates her standing in their iconic white dress, nibbling on a doughnut while coming prepared with a box of them in her other hand. As pictured above, she can be displayed either wearing a sunhat or without.

Coming in at 19cm (190mm) in height, this is a 1/8 scale figure which comes in at a standard retail price of 7,800 yen when first launched in 2014, with the 2019 re-release coming in at the same price. While you may be hard-pressed to find a new-in-box copy of this figure at retail price, I have noted that pre-owned variants at or below retail price regularly become available via different websites.
