For a while now, clients requesting the talents of creatives on the Japanese artist commissioning platform Skeb have been able to select from one of a number of genres: Illustration, Ugoira (Animation), Novels and Advice – each having display formats suited to each, and also making it clear what types of content that artists are willing to accept requests for. But there has been one glaring exception – comics and manga. These have traditionally fallen under Illustrations, but it has been, to date, up in the air around whether an artist is looking for illustrations or just manga works.
That has changed today, with Skeb adding a new Comic/Manga genre to its site. Artists can now make it clear whether or not they accept requests for manga works, and also have these works displayed separately on the Skeb homepage. This is not being rolled out retroactively, so may only slowly start appearing on artist pages.
Sadly, this doesn’t appear to introduce any new features. While it would have been very useful to allow artists to list, for example, ‘1 page per XXXX yen’ on their Skeb page, this is not possible, and remains prohibited by Skeb terms of services. Artists that do this unfortunately risk their accounts being banned.
