Acttil, a publishing / public relations company founded by former Nippon Ichi Software America employees have today announced that they have published a series of three Japanese folktake e-books on the iOS App Store today. These three stories – “Princess Kaguya”, “Issunboshi”, and “Urashima Taro” – are all well known folklore tales passed down for countless generations within Japan, much akin to Brothers Grimm tales that have been passed around to western youth over the past few centuries.
These tales will be available at a price of just $2.99 each, and are brought to life by the artwork of Taniel, who also worked on the Nintendo DS title A Witch’s Tale. The Japanese Folktales Series has a total of six stories, and Japanese Folktales Series 4 to 6 will become available soon.
Princess Kaguya: This is said to be the oldest Japanese narrative. It tells the story of a mysterious princess named Kaguya, who came from the Moon. The story begins with an old couple finding a baby inside a shining bamboo stalk!
Issunboushi: This tale is about an old couple who lived alone, and how the old woman desperately wished for a child. One day, a tiny baby boy was born to the old couple. The baby grew up to be a fine young man, but he was only the size of an adult’s fingertip…
Urashima Taro: This is one of the most famous Japanese folktales. Taro Urashima is a fisherman who was given the opportunity to visit an underwater palace for rescuing a turtle being harassed by children on the beach.
