Golf 5 MAX takes the Golf 5 VR simulator series in a very retro arcade direction. Developed by LENYA DIGITAL and published by AAA Game Studios, it’s out now on PC (via Steam) for $12.99 US. There’s a 25% discount until 16th November 2026.
The game boasts a blend of physics-based golf with the pressure of classic arcade golf and a very retro look. The “Birdie-or-Bust” mode is the highlight, effectively replicating the feel of the old coin-operated arcade cabinets where you can have a round end on the spot with an average score. Practice Mode lets you warm up from any hole and any position. Online play supports up to 4 players in Stroke Play, Match Play, and Time Attack. You can also enter the official International eGolf Federation tournaments and compete for a spot on the leaderboard.
Swings use a three-click system, and you can push well past 100% into the MAX zone for bigger drives (at the expense of accuracy). There’s an RPG-style progression system whereby you earn experience and can spend skill points on Power (for more powerful, longer shots), Technique (for more spin and shot shaping), Consistency (for more control over the shot meters), Recovery (for better shots out of bunkers and rough) and Accuracy (for a tighter spread around the target).
You can choose from eight golfers, each with their own backstory and style. We have Michael “Ole’ Reliable” Hoffman, a steady, composed golfer. Then there’s Janice “The Tigress” Nasato, a former gymnast with a strong command of the game and an extremely focused mindset. And Willie “Big Dog” Jackson, a power hitter with an explosive swing. They can be played across seven original 18-hole courses, all of which are based on real locations. These include the Colorado Desert Golf Club (a rocky course with plenty of water), Safari Ridge (with views of Kilimanjaro National Park), and the gardens of the Kamikochi Valley Retreat Golf Club.
Antonio Marín, CEO and co-founder of AAA Game Studios, said the aim was to bring arcade-style golf to those who had missed it the first time round.
Birdie-or-Bust Mode would have eaten rolls of quarters back in the ’90s. There is an entire generation of golf gaming fans that never experienced golf’s arcade glory days, and we wanted to bring yesteryear’s arcade cabinet experience to the next generation of golf fans…with no quarters necessary! This is only the beginning, we have much more to come after launch, stay tuned!
