Most bullet hell games are about shooting things down. Air Hares is about growing things. The farming shoot ’em up from husband-and-wife studio Wondoro arrives on Nintendo Switch on 29 October 2026, and launches with its full Hare Force Edition update included, bringing the number of playable pilots to five for couch co-op.
Players fly as Captain Rabbo Sunskipper over the dusty farmland of Winrose Warren, carrying a plane full of seeds and water. Each level is won by filling three carrot fields while falcons from the Gale Gang attack through wind, rain and lightning. Barrel rolls, parries and loop-the-loops help pilots stay in the air, but a level is only complete once the soil turns green. Over four stages and four bird bosses, Winrose grows from a starving warren into a thriving town.
The idea of a pilot whose mission is to make barren ground fertile again has personal meaning for Tim and Megan Bungeroth, the couple behind Wondoro. They made Air Hares during a long journey through infertility, working with freelance programmers, artists and musicians on a game where success comes from growing rather than destroying. Their family also grew to include Arthur, a Cairn terrier and chihuahua mix adopted from a rescue, who became the model for co-pilot Dirk Doggo, right down to a photo of Arthur holding a chew stick in his mouth like a cigar. Like Arthur, Dirk is stubborn, soft-hearted and always ready to give chase.
The Hare Force Edition adds three new pilots, each with different health, side speed and loop length. Linnie Lightfoote can roll further to escape danger, Betty Bunting holds steady in crosswinds that push others off course, and Candie Clayton fires three parry shots instead of one. The original pair have also gained new abilities. Rabbo can recover once after being shot down, and Dirk Doggo can draw every falcon on screen towards himself, taking the pressure off a partner who is busy farming.
The update also adds high scoreboards for single-player and co-op runs in both Story and Arcade modes, available on Steam and Switch. Every level includes three Carrot Achievements: fully seeding and watering every field, finishing without taking damage, and finishing without any aggression, which means saving every seed for the crops and relying only on dodges and defensive parries. A new Squadron section shows each pilot’s stats, abilities and backstory. The game also features an original soundtrack, hand-crafted pixel art and narrative cutscenes.
Air Hares launches on Nintendo Switch on 29 October 2026 for $4.99 USD or local equivalent, and can be wishlisted on the Nintendo eShop now.
