Pirates Republic Moves To Unreal Engine 5 As Developer Regains Rights

Pirates Republic is back in the hands of its developer. Golden Hind Games SA has re-obtained the rights to the pirate survival sandbox, and has marked the occasion with a new trailer and an update on where the game is heading next. The studio is currently moving Pirates Republic over to Unreal Engine 5, and plans to open alpha testing to members of its Discord community.

The game is set in the Caribbean in 1714 and begins with a voyage gone badly wrong. Shipwrecked and starting from scratch, players need to find food, craft tools, salvage materials and gather a scattered crew back together, with every shelter built and castaway rescued bringing them a step closer to sailing again. It can be played solo or with others in online co-op.

Freedom is a central theme, reflecting the pirates who wanted to live by their own rules. Buildings are constructed piece by piece, with walls, floors, roofs and furniture placed wherever players choose. Ships are designed from the keel up using a modular system, where decisions about hull shape, mast setup, deck layout and the number of oars all affect speed, durability and performance in combat. Golden Hind Games says these parts can be combined into more than 100 vessel configurations, ranging from small canoes to heavily armed frigates, and fitted with dozens of weapon types from light swivel guns to heavy cannons.

On land, Nassau expands as the player’s Fame grows. Each new arrival is procedurally generated with their own appearance, backstory, skills and personality. Players can form relationships, recruit crew members and romance allies, while running a democratic society whose members expect a fair share of the spoils and capable leadership. Leaders who fall short risk being marooned on a desert island by their own people. Raiding too aggressively brings its own danger, as the royal fleets of England and Spain will come for those who plunder too freely, making strong fortifications a necessity.

Combat takes place both aboard ship and at sea. Players can board enemy vessels and fight up close with swords, axes and improvised weapons, or use a flintlock pistol or musket to deal with threats from a distance. On the water, positioning a ship to unleash a broadside is key, whether in a duel with a rival captain or while defending Nassau’s walls against a large naval attack.
