The Reign of Talon storyline is heading into its final chapter, with Overwatch Season 5, titled A Grim Doctrine, set to go live on 7 October 2026 AEDT. The update brings a new Support Hero, a new map, role changes for an existing Hero, and a Halloween event, alongside a collaboration with Shadow Monarch.
At the centre of the season is Doctrine, a Support Hero with a violent history tied to Doomfist. The two characters’ paths cross again after Doomfist breaks Doctrine out of the Grímsvötn prison. Doctrine’s kit is built around both supporting his team and dealing damage. His Eternal Scepter can heal allies and damage enemies from mid-to-long range, while he can also deploy bat-like drones that boost his team’s healing and attack speed. His Ultimate redistributes lifeforce across the battlefield, granting allies Overhealth while reducing the health of enemies.
The prison Doctrine escapes from also serves as the setting for the season’s new map. Grímsvötn is described as the first new Escort map in years, taking place inside a prison located within an Icelandic volcanic fissure that has recently come under Talon’s control.
Doctrine is not the only Support addition this season. Sombra is moving from the Damage role to Support, which is being described as one of the biggest changes ever made to an existing Hero. Roadhog is also receiving a rework, which includes an altered Scrap Gun and a new ability called Trash Compactor.
Halloween is also being marked with Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games, which runs from 7 October to 2 November 2026. In this event, each death returns players to the match with random new powers. Players will also vote each week on whether Ashe, Moira or Winston is the next Hero to rise from the grave, with the roster expanding until it reaches 20 Heroes. For those after more seasonal cosmetics, Halloween-themed Battle Pass skins are part of the season. The Tech Witches collection is available from 10 October to 26 October 2026 AEDT, while Team Drives return from 30 October to 31 October 2026.
The Overwatch x Shadow Monarch collaboration runs from 7 October to 20 October 2026, offering dark fantasy and anime-inspired skins for five Heroes:
- Genji as Sung Jinwoo
- Reaper as Igris
- Anran as Cha Hae-In
- Reinhardt as Iron
- Lifeweaver as Choi Jong-In
Two new Mythics are also included in Season 5. The first is Dragon Shaoxia Wuyang, while the second is Treblemaker, which is Lúcio’s first Mythic Weapon and features a tiny dancing frog inside it. Players who missed out on rewards from earlier seasons will have another opportunity through Unvaulted Passes. This feature brings back revised versions of the Battle Passes from Seasons 1 through 15, allowing players to earn rewards they did not obtain the first time around.
