During the latest State of Play presentation, Santa Monica Studio announced that the original God of War trilogy is currently being remade to commemorate the franchise’s upcoming 20th anniversary. The reveal featured the return of TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos during the series’ Greek era.
While the remakes are in the early stages of development and few specific details were shared, the announcement served as the centerpiece of the series’ milestone celebrations leading into March 2026. Developers noted that it would be some time before further updates are provided, but they intend for the eventual reveal to be substantial.
In a surprise move, Sony also announced and immediately released a new title developed by Mega Cat Studios titled God of War Sons of Sparta. Unlike the main series’ 3D action gameplay, Sons of Sparta is a 2D action platformer featuring hand-drawn pixel animation. The game explores a canon storyline set during Kratos’ youth and his training at the Spartan Agoge alongside his brother, Deimos.
The narrative for this spin-off was written by the Santa Monica Studio team responsible for God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök. TC Carson reprises his role for the first time in over ten years, serving as the narrator for the story from the perspective of an adult Kratos.
Gameplay in Sons of Sparta adapts the franchise’s signature combat to a 2D plane. Kratos utilizes a spear and shield, alongside various divine artifacts referred to as the Gifts of Olympus, to battle both classic enemies and new creatures inspired by Greek mythology.
God of War Sons of Sparta is available now for the PlayStation 5 via the PlayStation Store.
