Developer Mother Gaia Studio and publisher CriticalLeap have confirmed the release details for their upcoming title, The Posthumous Investigation. This hand-drawn noir thriller is scheduled to arrive on PC via the Steam platform on 31 March 2026.
The narrative positions players in the role of a private investigator working within a purgatorial time loop set in 1937 Rio de Janeiro. The case seeks to present players with a unique scenario where the client is the murder victim himself, Brás Cubas. To break the cycle of the time loop, players are tasked with solving the mystery behind his death before the day resets.
The Posthumous Investigation draws upon inspiration from the works of Machado de Assis, the game features a cast of 14 distinct suspects. Players must learn the routines of these characters, shadow their movements, and identify contradictions in their alibis. The gameplay emphasizes pure logic without hand-holding, utilizing a “Thinking Board” feature to physically connect clues and reconstruct timelines. The developers compare the deduction mechanics to Return of the Obra Dinn, set against a classic Film Noir atmosphere.
For those wishing to preview the title, a playable browser-based demo has been made available via Spawnd. While the release at the end of March is specific to the PC platform, the studio has confirmed that a version for the Nintendo Switch is currently in development.
Game Director Bruno Toledo commented on the fusion of the time-loop mechanics with the literary setting:
We wanted to create a detective game where the setting itself is a puzzle. By combining the time-loop mechanic with the rich, satirical world of Machado de Assis, we’ve built a mystery that challenges players to think like a true investigator—where every failed loop is just another clue.
