A new Australian staging of Steel Magnolias has been announced for 2026, directed by Lee Lewis and featuring a cast of six. Written by Robert Harling, the production will visit Brisbane, Sydney, Wollongong, Canberra, Perth and Melbourne across April to August 2026.
Audiences will return to Truvy’s beauty salon, the social hub of a small Southern town, where friends trade gossip, face milestones and confront loss. The story moves from weddings and babies to divorces and funerals, with narrative aiming to lean on its characters to weave a tale of humour, resilience and friendship when tragedy strikes.
Steel Magnolias first opened in Australia at the York Theatre at Sydney’s Seymour Centre in May 1988 before touring to Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre. That production featured Maggie Dence, Nancye Hayes, Melissa Jaffer, Genevieve Lemon, Pat McDonald and Nicole Kidman in her professional stage debut.
