Revealed during today’s Nintendo Direct, Square Enix has announced Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, a remake of 2000’s Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The standalone single player RPG is scheduled to release on 5 February 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store.
The project presents the classic adventure with a new hand crafted look that aims to feel like a living storybook. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined revisits the original’s island hopping narrative where the party uncovers history one fragment at a time, while updating visuals, mechanics and pacing for modern audiences.
The team highlights a hand crafted aesthetic that reimagines Akira Toriyama’s character designs in a charming 3D style using dolls created in the real world. Towns, fields and dungeons adopt a diorama inspired presentation to bring the world to life with a miniature set feel that still reads as a full scale adventure.
The story also strives to remain faithful faithful to the source material with enhancements to streamline the experience. Alongside the main questline, players can take on optional side stories, quests and minigames that expand on the cast and setting without interrupting the central progression.
Combat has been overhauled in hopes of crating a more dynamic turn based experience. The updated vocation system introduces Moonlighting, which allows a character to use two vocations at once. A Let Loose ability can be triggered when a character gets worked up, while a new Monster Master vocation brings the Positive Reinforcement perk that summons powerful monsters to strike enemies. Meanwhile, exploration again revolves around collecting fragments and completing tablets to unlock and expand new regions, with towns to visit, dungeons to conquer and quests to tackle throughout a range of distinct worlds.
