During the Gearbox Main Theater Show at PAX West, 2K and Gearbox Software outlined how Borderlands 4 intends to keep players engaged beyond the campaign. This comes ahead of the latest chapter in the looter-shooter series launching on 12 September 2025 on all major platforms, the exception being the Nintendo Switch 2 which requires a couple more weeks until its 3 October release date.
On the endgame front, Borderlands 4 sets out to shift focus to ongoing progression and high-end loot hunting on Kairos. Weekly challenge missions and unlockable Specializations expand build options, while a reimagined Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode returns with five unlockable difficulty ranks. Rather than replaying the campaign to climb, players raise their rank by clearing curated mission challenges that scale in difficulty, hoping to avoid repetitive refarming along the way.
Each Ultimate Vault Hunter rank introduces exclusive Firmware, presented as set bonuses attached to gear and first encountered during the campaign. Collecting more Firmware increases the corresponding stat bonuses. Firmware can be transferred once to another item, after which the source item is destroyed and the bonus cannot be transferred again.
Several rotating activities are designed to feed the chase for Legendary drops. Weekly Wildcards deliver missions with a guaranteed Legendary reward. Moxxi’s Big Encore highlights a single boss each week that can be unlocked with Eridium for an amped-up variant and boosted drop rates. Maurice’s Black Market Machine sends players across Kairos to track down its stock, with each player’s game offering different loot. All of these activities support online matchmaking by intent, making it easier to team up with players pursuing the same goals.
Post-launch content will mix free updates with paid expansions across two strands called Story Packs and Bounty Packs. The first announced Story Pack, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, brings back fan favourite Ellie in a cosmic horror-themed chapter with a darker tone. It adds a new region of Kairos, multiple main and side missions, fresh Legendary gear, and introduces the first post-launch playable Vault Hunter. Cosmetic additions include four Vault Hunter skins, two vehicle skins, three ECHO-4 drone skins plus attachments, and one ECHO-4 frame.
Bounty Packs focus on narrative assignments that broaden the cast introduced on Kairos. The initial release spotlights Rush, leader of the Outbounders, and comes with new main missions, a new boss, new Legendary gear, one player skin, one ECHO-4 drone skin, a new vehicle, and a Vault Card that unlocks 24 cosmetics and four pieces of rerollable gear.
Free seasonal mini-events begin in October with Horrors of Kairos, adding new Legendary weapons, cosmetics, and a weather variant. Invincible Bosses will also return as free updates, appearing in new high-level arenas that lean into the sequel’s traversal mechanics. Powerful new Legendaries await those who clear these encounters, and each Invincible Boss will arrive alongside a new level for Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode.
