During QuakeCon’s opening stream, id Software delivered a slate of updates for classic and current fans alike, headlined by the release of Heretic + Hexen, a definitive re-release of two foundational first-person shooters. Alongside this launch, DOOM: The Dark Ages received its second major update, and DOOM Eternal’s PC modding community now has a dedicated in-game hub for sharing and playing custom content. Heretic + Hexen Collection Arrives on Modern Platforms
id Software, working with Nightdive Studios, has unveiled Heretic + Hexen, bringing these shooters back with enhancements for contemporary hardware. The collection is now available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Both games have received updates including improved performance, an enhanced soundtrack from composer Andrew Hulshult, online cross-platform and local split-screen multiplayer modes, and integrated mod support. Players who pick up this new edition will receive the following:
- Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders
- Hexen: Beyond Heretic
- Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel
- Two new episodes developed collaboratively by id Software and Nightdive Studios: Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur
Existing owners of any of these titles will automatically receive a free upgrade to the new combined release, while retaining access to their original versions.
DOOM: The Dark Ages Receives Major Update
Also announced was Update 2 for DOOM: The Dark Ages, now live worldwide. This patch introduces a range of bug fixes and quality of life improvements, but the most significant addition is the Ripatorium, an endless arena mode with customizable waves and timed challenges.
Players logging in between now and 1 September will also receive the limited-time QuakeCon skin (delivered within 48 hours of login), and can unlock the Perfection DOOM Slayer skin by completing the three new Ripatorium arenas.

DOOM Eternal Expands PC Mod Support
Rounding out the announcements, id Software has made PC modding tools widely available for DOOM Eternal. Through a new launcher, players can now browse, download, and play community-created mods directly, as well as combine multiple mods for more customized experiences. Since last year’s introduction of idStudio, nearly 700 mods have been developed by the community.
