BBG Entertainment is bringing a retro experience with 40 years behind it to gamescom 2025 in Cologne, with Boulder Dash set to mark its 40th anniversary in style. Visitors to Hall 10.2’s retro area will be among the first to experience the premiere of the BOULDER DASH – 40th Anniversary Edition, featuring brand new levels, updated visuals, and fresh gameplay challenges. The new edition will be released on 21 August 2025 for Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Mac.
A centrepiece of the celebration is the grand finale of the international Boulder Dash Championship, taking place live at gamescom on Saturday, 23 August 2025. Winners from regional tournaments in Warsaw, Rome, and Berlin will compete for the top spot, with composer Chris Hülsbeck, who created the soundtrack for the new edition, present to award the champions and accompany the final in person.
From 20 to 22 August, all gamescom attendees can try their hand at qualifying for the championship final in the BOULDER DASH CONTEST, organised with EIGHT BIT E-SPORTS. Daily competitions will be held at 10:00, 13:00, and 16:00, and participants can play on classic systems like the Commodore C64 and Amiga, as well as modern platforms. Top players will earn certificates, exclusive prizes, and the chance to join the grand finale on Saturday.
Beyond Boulder Dash, BBG Entertainment will also unveil modern reboots of two more 8-bit classics during Gamescom 2025.
