Square Enix has rolled out the May version update for Final Fantasy XI Online, introducing a notable new feature: the Character Race Change Service. This marks the first time in the game’s 23-year history that players can change their character’s race and appearance through an official system. The update also includes new Ambuscade content, updates to Besieged, and a series of May-themed campaigns.
The newly implemented Character Race Change Service allows players to change their character’s race and appearance once per purchase, with changes reversible for up to 14 days. The service is available as a paid option via the PlayOnline platform.
Returning this month is the Vana’Bout Records of Eminence objective, allowing players to team up or go solo in large-scale activities to earn rewards. Besieged has also been refreshed, with the introduction of Level 11 Beastmen enemies and a new Morale Gauge that reacts dynamically based on the performance of the Five Serpent Generals and overall battlefield conditions.
As part of the game’s 23rd anniversary, the ongoing Return Home to Vana’diel Campaign allows former subscribers of PlayOnline and Final Fantasy XI to log in and play for free until 26 May 2025 at 1:00 a.m. Pacific Time.
Additionally, during the 23rd Vana’versary episode of the Freshly Picked Vana’diel broadcast, Producer Yoji Fujito unveiled three new Magic: The Gathering crossover cards: “Shantotto’s Coercion,” “Vana’diel Adventures,” and “The Shadow Lord,” following the earlier reveal of “Shantotto, Tactician Magician.”
