Nintendo has announced that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be rolling out worldwide starting 5 June 2025 with a suggested retail price of $449.99 USD or local equivalent. With the aim of building on the original system’s hybrid design, the Switch 2 introduces several hardware and feature enhancements aimed at improving the user experience across portable and docked modes – and hopefully for multiplatform games allowing more parity with the other console competitors on the market.
Among the key additions are the newly designed Joy-Con 2 controllers, which attach magnetically to the console and can also function as mice on compatible surfaces. The system includes a larger 7.9-inch LCD screen capable of 1080p output in handheld mode, improved internal processing power, upgraded audio with spatial sound, and a new USB-C port placement that allows charging while in tabletop mode.
A bundle will also be available from launch day. The Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle includes the system and a digital copy of Mario Kart World, with a recommended price of USD $499.99 or local equivalent.
Nintendo has confirmed that most existing Nintendo Switch games and peripherals will be compatible with the new system, though not all titles are guaranteed to function fully. The Switch 2 supports backward compatibility with digital and physical games and includes 256 GB of internal storage, a significant upgrade over its predecessor. Furthermore it has been confirmed that the Classic Controller will be supported for the Nintendo Switch 2, a huge benefit for those, like myself, who prefer a more traditional controller experience where possible.
Online play sees expansion through the introduction of GameChat, a built-in feature that allows voice and video chat between up to 12 players. Up to four players can also share their screen, and video functionality can be enabled via a compatible USB-C camera accessory. Until the end of March 2026, GameChat will be accessible without a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Other new system features include:
- Adjustable rear stand for better viewing angles in tabletop mode
- Up to 4K resolution output and 120 frames per second via compatible games and TVs when docked
- GameShare functionality, enabling users to play games locally or online with others who do not own the title
- Virtual game cards, which allow users to manage and share digital games between family accounts
- Expanded accessibility options including font resizing, a screen reader, and speech-to-text for GameChat
Nintendo also confirmed that the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service will support Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics, launching alongside the new console with a selection of titles including F-Zero GX, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and SOULCALIBUR II. A new wireless controller inspired by the original GameCube design will be available for separate purchase for members of the service.
Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 are scheduled to open from 9 April 2025 at participating North American retailers – while internationally, some pre-orders are already being taken.
