Nintendo has confirmed that Mario Kart World, a new entry in the long-running racing franchise, will be released on 5 June 2025, coinciding with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 and available as either a cheaper digital bundle alongside the console or a standard release version. Designed as a fresh take on the series, the game is set in an expansive interconnected world and introduces several new modes and gameplay systems.
Players will race seamlessly across connected courses in what Nintendo describes as a more integrated Mario Kart experience. Up to 24 drivers can compete in a single race, marking an increase from previous instalments.
A new competitive mode titled Knockout Tour challenges players to complete a series of back-to-back courses and checkpoints. There are no pit stops, and players who fail to reach each checkpoint with a high-enough placement will be eliminated from the race.
For more casual play, Free Roam allows players to leave the traditional track and explore the open environment in any direction. This mode supports group play and includes features such as photo opportunities at scenic locations.
Additional information about Mario Kart World will be shared in a dedicated Mario Kart World Direct presentation scheduled for 17 April 2025 at 06:00 PST / 09:00 EST. The question is… while this is set to be a major overhaul for a relatively stable franchise over the decades… is this overhaul one that is needed?
