During the March Nintendo Direct showcase, Square Enix confirmed that SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered, an enhanced version of the 1999 role-playing game, is now available. The remaster is accessible on not only the Nintendo Switch, but also PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC via Steam (including Steam Deck support), iOS and Android devices.
The game follows the intertwined stories of Gustave, a royal heir navigating a political power struggle, and Wil, a young excavator uncovering a hidden threat to the world. The remaster features updated HD visuals, refined gameplay systems, an overhauled user interface, and new story content that expands on the original narrative.
Character sprites have been upscaled for modern displays, with additional unique sprites created for characters who previously lacked them. The watercolour-style artwork, a hallmark of the original game, has also been enhanced for clarity and vibrancy. The user interface has been redesigned to improve accessibility and intuitive gameplay, including adjustments to the History Choice and chronology systems.
New story events have been written by Benny Matsuyama under the supervision of SaGa series General Director Akitoshi Kawazu. Other additional features include Parameter Inheritance, New Game+, and postgame content that provide extended play opportunities. Western audiences will also have access to the excavation minigame originally designed for the Japan-exclusive PocketStation. This feature, now titled Dig! Dig! Digger, is playable outside Japan for the first time.
