Queensland Theatre Announces Regional Tour for Drizzle Boy

Queensland Theatre’s award-winning production Drizzle Boy will embark on a regional tour across Queensland and Canberra in October and November 2024. The play, which premiered in 2023, made history by featuring Australia’s first neurodivergent character portrayed by a neurodivergent actor on a main stage. It will tour seven locations, starting in Caloundra on 18 October and concluding in Redlands on 21 November.

Written by playwright Ryan Enniss, Drizzle Boy follows the journey of a young autistic man as he navigates adulthood. The production blends satire and magical realism, exploring themes of self-discovery and societal misunderstandings. Directed by Daniel Evans, Queensland Theatre’s Associate Artistic Director, the play won the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award 2022-2023 and received two Matilda Awards for Best Mainstage Production and Best Direction.

Daniel R. Nixon reprises his role as the lead character, with Judy Hainsworth and Anthony Gooley playing his parents. The production seeks to provide an authentic representation of neurodivergent experiences, with Evans highlighting the importance of casting neurodivergent actors to lend credibility and authenticity to the story.

The tour is part of Queensland Theatre’s initiative to bring diverse stories to a broader audience. Performances will take place in Caloundra, Bundaberg, Proserpine, Townsville, Cairns, Canberra, and Redlands, with single-night performances at most venues and a three-night run in Canberra.

The production also considers sensory sensitivities, aiming to create a comfortable experience for all audience members. According to the creative team, the play’s design includes elements that cater to individuals sensitive to sound and light without altering the overall theatrical experience.
