Encompassing games such as Splatoon and Super Mario Maker, Nintendo has today discontinued all online services for their last generation of video game consoles, including the Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U. As of now, offline features for games on these consoles still work, however any online functionality – including online multiplayer – has now ceased, with a few limited first-party exceptions (such as Pokémon Bank and Pokémon Transporter) and potentially a few third-party exceptions as well. Ultimately, this is the fate that awaits most live service games.
We sincerely thank players for using the online services of Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software over a long period of time and apologize for any inconvenience.

Unfortunately, this also means that making purchases via the Nintendo eShop on both consoles is no longer possible. However, Nintendo has confirmed that for the “foreseeable future”, it will still be possible to download update data and redownload purchased software and DLC from the Nintendo eShop.
