New PlayStation Stars Loyalty Program Announced by Sony

Compared against the Xbox Rewards and MyNintendo Points systems implemented by their competitors, Sony Interactive Entertainment has had nothing comparable for owners of PlayStation Hardware – at least until now. This week, Sony announced PlayStation Stars, a loyalty program “that celebrates you: the players”, which is scheduled to launch later this year.

According to SIE, “Once you become a member, you can earn rewards by completing a variety of campaigns and activities. The “Monthly Check-In” campaign simply requires you to play any game to receive a reward, while other campaigns require you to win tournaments, earn specific trophies, or even be the first player to platinum a blockbuster title in your local time zone”.

PlayStation Stars members will be able to obtain loyalty points, which they claim “can be redeemed in a catalogue that may include PSN wallet funds and select PlayStation Store products. As an additional benefit, PlayStation Plus members enrolled in PlayStation Stars automatically earn points for purchases on the PlayStation Store”.

Digital Collectables are also on the agenda for the PlayStation Stars program, which are described as “They are digital representations of things that PlayStation fans enjoy, including figurines of beloved and iconic characters from games and other forms of entertainment, as well as cherished devices that tap into Sony’s history of innovation. There will always be a new collectible to earn, an ultra-rare collectible to strive for, or something surprising to collect just for fun”.

We are very likely to hear more about this program in the coming months, but what we know now is that some early tests are being done on the program, to be launched later this year as part of “phased regional rollouts”.
